Walking Your Dog In The Rain

<< Back to Pet Health Blog

Dogs need to live an active lifestyle in order to stay trim and healthy. The weather can be a nuisance, but it is possible to walk your dog in the rain. If you live in an area where it rains a lot or if you are itching to walk your dog and it happens to be raining, keep the following suggestions in mind before heading out.

When you take your pooch out for a walk, dress him or her in a raincoat. Doggie raincoats come in a variety of sizes, styles, and colors. You can pick up a doggie raincoat at your local pet store. After putting your dog in a raincoat, put him or her on a leash, grab your umbrella, and head out. With a raincoat and an umbrella, your dog might not even feel any rain at all. They even sell doggie umbrellas that attach to your dog’s leash; the umbrella is smaller and goes right over the dog’s head. Moreover, if your dog isn’t too picky, you could also try dressing him or her in doggie rain boots.

When you return home and you find that your dog is wet, get all of the initial moisture off by drying him or her with a large towel. They do make towels specifically for drying off wet dogs, but if you only have a standard bath towel, that is perfectly fine too.

Most dogs and people don’t enjoy being outdoors while the raining is coming down. Don’t be shocked if you’re dog walks faster than usual and/or wants to go home earlier than usual. You can always walk again later if it stops raining just wait for a day with better weather to walk your dog.
