Safety Tips For Your Dog During Hurricane Season

<< Back to Pet Health Blog

If you live in an area where there’s a possibility of a hurricane striking during hurricane season, it’s important that you know the proper steps to take to ensure that everyone in your home stays safe. If you have a dog, you need to take a few precautions to keep your dog safe as well.

If you have received a hurricane warning, first, make sure your dog is inside. Even if your dog is an outside dog, bring him or her inside. If you are forced to evacuate your home, make sure you bring your furry friend along with you. If your home isn’t safe for you to be in, it’s not safe your dog to be in either.

Have an emergency kit on hand to take with you in cause of evacuation. This kit should include snacks for you, a flashlight, water bottles, money (cash), dog treats, and anything else you think you’ll need. Before a storm hits, make sure you have a “godparent” for your dog. If something was to happen to you or you are unable to care for your pooch after the storm, it’s important that someone else can take your dog in. Too many dogs end up living on the streets after storms due to poor planning and lack of communication. Furthermore, get some identification for your dog. Purchase a dog collar and pet ID tag. Include the dog’s name, your name, and contact information, in case he or she gets lost in the chaos.

Hurricanes aren’t likely to hit, but they do occur. It’s worth it to take the time to make sure that you know what to do if a hurricane were to hit instead of leaving it up to chance. When it comes to the safety of you, your family, and your dog(s), prepare and plan ahead.
